Beauty News| Jo Malone sues Jo Malone?

In one of the beauty industry’s most surprising legal twists, fragrance pioneer Jo Malone has found herself at the centre of a lawsuit over the use of her own name. The case involves The Estée Lauder Companies, which owns the luxury fragrance brand Jo Malone London.

The dispute stems from Malone’s collaboration with Zara through her newer fragrance venture, Jo Loves. According to reports, Estée Lauder claims that the use of “Jo Malone” in marketing materials could cause confusion with the brand they acquired when Malone sold her original company in 1999.

After leaving the business in 2006, Malone launched Jo Loves in 2011, carving out a fresh space in the fragrance market with inventive scent stories and artistic collaborations. But the lawsuit raises a fascinating industry question: when founders sell their brands, do they also lose control of their own names? This might be a reminder of the complicated relationship between creativity, ownership, and legacy.
