Designer on focus| Jonathan Anderson

Jonathan Anderson is one of fashion’s most cerebral and quietly radical forces.

Born in Northern Ireland, his entry into fashion was anything but traditional. Initially training as an actor at Juilliard in New York, Anderson shifted paths after discovering a deeper fascination with costume, identity, and how clothing shapes character. He went on to study menswear at the London College of Fashion, where his conceptual approach quickly stood out.

In 2008, Anderson launched JW Anderson as a menswear label, later expanding into womenswear and blurring the boundaries between the two. His early collections challenged rigid ideas of masculinity, introducing fluid silhouettes, unexpected proportions, and a softness rarely seen in men’s fashion at the time. This fearless experimentation caught the attention of the industry and eventually LVMH.

Appointed creative director of Loewe in 2013, Anderson transformed the Spanish heritage house into a hub of modern craft and cultural relevance. Under his leadership, Loewe became synonymous with artisanal luxury, sculptural leatherwork, and fashion that sits comfortably between art and wearability. Pieces like the Puzzle bag became instant modern classics, while his runway shows consistently push intellectual and aesthetic boundaries.

Anderson is known not just for his design vision, but for his personality: thoughtful, private, and deeply curious. He resists fashion noise, preferring substance over spectacle, and often draws inspiration from art, film, and craft rather than trends. In an industry driven by speed, Jonathan Anderson stands out for slowing things down creating fashion that asks questions, sparks conversation, and ultimately reshapes how we think about clothes.
