The Bag Whisperer Who Turned a Side Hustle into a Fashion Powerhouse
Brandon Blackwood didn’t just break into fashion he strutted in with a tote that said, “End Systemic Racism,” and the world took notice. Born in Brooklyn and raised between NYC and Tokyo, Blackwood initially pursued neuroscience in College. However, his passion for fashion led him to switch majors and eventually launch his eponymous brand in 2015.
His first creation, the Portmore backpack, was a testament to his determination crafted while working at a consignment shop and featured in Essence magazine shortly after. But it was the 2020 release of the “End Systemic Racism” mini-tote that catapulted him into the spotlight, selling out rapidly and resonating deeply during a pivotal cultural moment.
Today, his designs are beloved by Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and Megan Thee Stallion (who wore a custom Blackwood corset gown to the 2023 VMAs like the goddess she is). His pieces are now seen on red carpets, in editorials, and in the wild on some very well-dressed people.

His Spring/Summer 2024 collections serve up earth-toned oil leather, vibrant minis, and luxe textures that scream “I’ve arrived.” And the best part? There’s always a sense of purpose stitched into every piece whether it’s about empowerment, representation, or just looking really, really good.

From political fashion statements to playful everyday bags, Brandon Blackwood is proof you can be stylish, smart, and a little bit spicy all at once. Definitely one for the fashionfoodcocktails.com girlies to keep watching.
