One to know| Photographer Helmut Newton

Helmut Newton was a ground-breaking German-Australian photographer best known for his bold, sensual, and often controversial black-and-white fashion photography.

Born in Berlin in 1920, Newton fled Nazi Germany and eventually settled in Australia, where he began his career in photography. By the 1970s and 80s, he had become a dominant force in fashion media, regularly shooting for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel.

Newton’s work stood out for its provocative nature he portrayed women as powerful, commanding, and often erotically charged. His most notable series, “Big Nudes”, debuted in 1980 and shocked the art world with its stark, life-sized images of nude women posed confidently and confrontationally. Another standout piece, “Sie kommen” (They Are Coming), features two sets of images one clothed, one nude of the same women walking forward with strength and grace, blurring the line between fashion and fine art.

Rather than simply objectify, Newton’s images often explored themes of dominance, voyeurism, and gender dynamics. His lens captured a raw, unapologetic form of femininity that sparked debate but also admiration. He challenged the norms of traditional fashion photography and redefined how power and sexuality could coexist in visual storytelling.

Today, Helmut Newton remains one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. His legacy lives on in galleries, magazines, and the work of countless artists inspired by his fearless vision.
