Fashion News| Hedi Slimane Departs Celine, Michael Rider Steps In

Hedi Slimane’s exit from Celine marks the end of a transformative era. Appointed in 2018, Slimane radically shifted Celine’s aesthetic, moving away from Phoebe Philo’s minimalism toward a rock ‘n’ roll, youth-driven vision. Despite this Céline’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection featured minimalist cuts and silhouettes, very reminiscent of Phoebes era.

Although initial backlash, Slimane’s bold approach led to a surge in revenue, attracting a new, younger clientele. However, his tenure was not without controversy, including rumours of his tight control over the brand and the decision to drop the accent from “Céline.” These moves divided fashion fans, though his collections remained commercially successful.

As for Slimane’s future, speculation suggests he may join another major fashion house or even launch his own label, where his creativity would have no limits.

Now, Celine’s direction shifts under Michael Rider, who has been named Slimane’s successor. Rider, with experience at Jil Sander and Margiela, brings a minimalist, refined touch to his designs, offering a stark contrast to Slimane’s edgier style. Known for his focus on craftsmanship and sustainability, Rider is expected to take Celine back to its roots, appealing to a more mature, fashion-forward audience while pushing eco-conscious initiatives.

As Rider takes the reins, the fashion world eagerly awaits to see how he balances Celine’s heritage with his own innovative vision. The brand is poised for another exciting evolution.
