A Trailblazer in Fashion and Advocate for Diversity

Bethann Hardison is a pioneering force in the fashion industry, leaving an indelible mark on the world of fashion and paving the way for greater diversity. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1942, Hardison grew up in a vibrant and creative environment. Raised by her single mother, she was instilled with a strong sense of independence and resilience, which would shape her future career. Her path to the fashion industry wasn’t direct—initially working in the garment district as a salesperson, it was here that she caught the eye of designer Willi Smith, who introduced her to the world of fashion.

Hardison’s entry into modelling in the late 1960s was ground-breaking. She quickly became one of the most recognizable Black models in a predominantly white industry, walking for major designers like Halston and Ossie Clark. Her presence alone was revolutionary, but it was her activism behind the scenes that truly cemented her legacy. In the 1980s, Hardison transitioned from modelling to becoming an agent, founding her own agency, Bethann Management. Through this platform, she discovered and nurtured major Black talents like Naomi Campbell and Tyson Beckford, forever changing the face of fashion.

Throughout her career, Hardison has been a vocal advocate for diversity, calling out the lack of representation on runways and in campaigns. Her activism led to the formation of the Black Girls Coalition in 1988, aimed at supporting Black models and advocating for their fair treatment in the industry. She has also worked closely with organizations like the CFDA to push for inclusivity within fashion.

Hardison’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2014, she received the CFDA’s Founder’s Award for her groundbreaking work in advocating for diversity. She was also honored with the Vanguard Award at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event.

For Black creatives and aspiring fashion professionals globally, Bethann Hardison is not just an inspiration—she is a symbol of possibility. Her impact continues to resonate, reminding the world of the importance of inclusivity and representation.
