The Legacy of a Legendary Shoe Designer
Jimmy Choo, a name synonymous with luxury and elegance, began his journey into shoe design in the bustling city of Penang, Malaysia, where he was born into a family of shoemakers. His passion for creating beautiful footwear was evident from a young age, and he honed his craft at the Cordwainers Technical College in London.
After graduation, Choo set up his first workshop in an old hospital building in East London in 1986, where he quickly garnered attention for his exquisite, handmade shoes.
The pivotal moment in Choo’s career came in 1996 when he met Tamara Mellon, then an accessories editor at British Vogue. Recognizing Choo’s exceptional talent, Mellon proposed a partnership to create a luxury shoe brand. With Mellon’s business acumen and Choo’s design expertise, the Jimmy Choo brand was born. Together, they transformed the brand into a global powerhouse, adored by celebrities and fashionistas alike. Their collaboration led to iconic designs that graced red carpets and fashion runways, solidifying Jimmy Choo’s reputation in the fashion industry.

In 2001, Choo decided to sell his 50% stake in the company for £10 million (approximately $13 million). This decision allowed him to return to his roots and focus on his passion for creating bespoke shoes under the label “Jimmy Choo Couture.” He also dedicated time to mentoring young designers and supporting charitable causes related to education and craftsmanship.

Today, Jimmy Choo continues to influence the fashion world through his bespoke designs and his commitment to nurturing the next generation of shoemakers. His legacy lives on in the brand he co-founded, which remains a symbol of elegance, luxury, and impeccable craftsmanship.
