Italian fashion icon Roberto Cavalli, known for his extravagant designs and vibrant prints, has passed away in Florence at the age of 83.
Cavalli’s legacy is marked by his unapologetically sexy aesthetic, characterized by flamboyant prints inspired by exotic flora and fauna, daring hemlines, and waistlines that plunged to new depths.
Beyond his design prowess, Cavalli lived a lavish lifestyle befitting his larger-than-life persona. His sprawling Tuscan estate boasted a vineyard, a tanning machine, racehorses, Ferraris, and an eclectic menagerie of animals, including parrots, iguanas, and even a tiger. This opulence extended to his personal helicopter and a superyacht named Freedom, inspired by the movie Batman.
Cavalli’s fashion journey began in 1970 when he launched his eponymous label, making waves with his patented technique for printing on leather. His innovative approach caught the attention of French fashion houses, earning him commissions and acclaim. He later revolutionized denim with sand-blasted and stretch jeans, launching the successful Cavalli Jeans line.

Throughout his career, Cavalli’s designs attracted a star-studded clientele, including Brigitte Bardot, Sofia Loren, and later, David and Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez. His brand expanded rapidly, encompassing a wide range of products from underwear to homeware.
Despite his success, financial challenges loomed in later years, leading to bankruptcy protection and eventual acquisition by the Dubai-based Vision Investment Company. Through it all, Cavalli’s spirit and vision endured, with Sicilian designer Fausto Puglisi taking the helm as creative director in 2020.
Roberto Cavalli’s legacy lives on as an inspiration to the fashion world and beyond. His daring creativity, coupled with his indomitable spirit, will continue to shape the industry for years to come.
We salute you Sig. Cavalli, may you Rest in Peace!
